The basic idea behind newborn screening is that babies are born with rare conditions for which even the best pediatrician cannot diagnose until the condition causes irreversible problems in the baby. So the idea is to do a test (newborn screening) soon after the baby is born to detect the condition before any symptoms of the condition occur and then start a treatment to prevent the future harm from the condition.
